Key of Absence was created in reference to Key of Presence, both for the GrauSchumacher Piano Duo.Together with Key Of Will ( which premiered at the Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen in 2018) all three works for 2 pianos, live electronics and recordings make up the “Trilogie für zwei Flügel”.
„I wish this sounded like it has never never has.“
Contained within “Trilogy “, the term ”logos“ (word / speech ) molds the formal framework in Key of Absence for an aesthetic exploration of the meaning of the past in terms of music, music tradition, as well as performance. Due to the piece´s spatially – mirrored interlocking of both pianos, the instruments are conceived as an extended dining table, at which the players sit opposite from one another. Conversations assemble through and about music, but the players seem ever to disappear – in spiral-like loops or virtuoso rhythmic patterns – into their own cosmos. Confronting the players with references to the past forms a continuous attempt to create the present.
