FMN (FRAU MUSICA NOVA) presents forward-looking composers, performers and interpreters whose artistic language evokes a confrontation with the present and the contemporary. The focus is on an experimental approach to music and its interaction with media, performance and theatricality.
FMN explores boundaries, continuously expands the spectrum of transmedial productions and advocates overcoming the boundaries of genre and gender. In addition, FMN stands for the opening of the genre „contemporary music festival“ towards an open encounter platform of the arts.
Germany’s tradition-rich festival of female composers was founded in 1997 by music journalist Gisela Gronemeyer and pianist Deborah Richards. In 2013, composer Brigitta Muntendorf took over the artistic direction with Ensemble Garage and began to give the concert series a new face. Since 2020, FMN has had a dual artistic leadership consisting of Brigitta Muntendorf and dramaturg and producer Beate Schüler. Their joint focus is on the work of composers and performers who understand contemporary music as transmedial, intercultural, and genre-free, as an experiment in boundaries.
Throughout its existence, FMN has been closely associated with Deutschlandfunk. All concerts are recorded, produced and subsequently broadcast with moderation in the Deutschlandfunk program. Furthermore, in cooperation with other festivals and institutions such as the Heroines of Sound Festival, HELLERAU – European Center for the Arts, Taschenopernfestival Salzburg, female:pressure, the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences or the Academy of Media Arts Cologne, FMN is developing an important and forward-looking network to disseminate the work of selected current artists.
